Early Biosphere: Origin and Evolution

We argue that the process of the origin and evolution of living organisms is indivisible from the process of the origin and evolution of biosphere, the global planetary system. The most general features of biosphere evolution as a directed process are formulated in the principle of “bio-actualism”. It is demonstrated, that this principle, stated for Phanerozoic eon, hold for early biosphere up ...

Prospects for the Study of Evolution in the Deep Biosphere

Since the days of Darwin, scientists have used the framework of the theory of evolution to explore the interconnectedness of life on Earth and adaptation of organisms to the ever-changing environment. The advent of molecular biology has advanced and accelerated the study of evolution by allowing direct examination of the genetic material that ultimately determines the phenotypes upon which sele...

Directed Evolution of the Biosphere: Biogeochemical Selection or Gaia?*

At the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries, a few Russian scientists proposed an interrelated hypothesis on the coevolution of life and the environment. Because political, linguistic, and cultural barriers between Russia and the rest of the world existed through most of the twentieth century, many of their concepts are not well known in Western science. The synthe...

Interactive comment on “ Comets , carbonaceous meteorites , and the origin of the biosphere ”

I want to thank Prof. Rozanov for his review of the manuscript and these insightful comments. As Prof. Rozanov is well aware the field of Bacterial Paleontology is still young and not yet thoroughly understood in spite of the many very important contributions of paleontologists who have carefully studied the extensive assemblages of bacterial fossils that are found in Phanerozoic, Proterozoic, ...

Pg. S3, Paragraphs 1-4. I fully agree with the reviewer that the Whipple “dirty snowball” was hit hard by the results from the probes to comet Halley. However, the “dirty snowball” model has continued to persist, despite all data to the contrary and it is for that reason that I chose the word “paradigm.” That seems to be the nature of paradigms; they are so deeply entrenched into the consensus ...
